Only in Florida

This page has been far too depressing for the past few weeks.... and I've been avoiding updating it. But I woke up kind of early today, and figured it's now or never.

Remember last year, when I posted about the Mullet Toss (here's a refresher... in case you missed it). Good news this year... I didn't get hit by a fish. We all had a few close calls, though. Much like a football, they often bounce unpredictably after hitting the ground.

This one almost bounced out of bounds. To be honest, in the world of Mullet Tossing, I'm not sure if landing on the foul line makes it foul or fair. So don't ask.

There was, once again, an unusual assortment of folks at the Mullet Toss. The crowd wasn't as big as last year's... they had to re-schedule it to a later date this year, and a lot of the snowbirds had already left Southwest Florida for cooler climates.
The die-hards were still there, though. This guy was really competitive. He brought special boots to wear when it was his turn, did his share of trash-talking, and had one of the best tosses we saw (about 90 feet, If I remember correctly). He threw at least three times-- at $5 a pop.

Of course, some people do it just for the novelty of the event. I got a kick out of this woman, who (forgive the pun), looked a bit like a fish out of water. Not that Matlacha doesn't have it's share of bikers-- it does. But most of the folks there were dressed a little more casually. She was a trooper though, and despite the fact that she didn't come close to breaking any mullet toss records, she at least looked like a bad-ass doing it.

But like I said, for the most part, the Mullet Toss is a pretty casual event. It's hosted annually in Matlacha, with is an odd (but very cool) little fishing village-turned-artists community. Cute little galleries are surrounded by tiny little trailers. But don't let the single-wides in the background fool you. They're all on canals, and waterfront property in these parts doesn't come cheap (even with the current miserable state of Southwest Florida property values). Many of these single-wides have docks with boat lifts, and nice little boats parked outside... probably worth more than their homes are.

Back behind the main strip in town are a bunch of nice waterfront homes. Nothing fancy-schmancy, no "McMansions." But nice. In fact, the CEO where I work lives in Matlacha. But I digress.

Much like the attractions a few hours up the road in Orlando, the Mullet Toss is fun for the whole family. Little kids toss their mullets first. This little girl was a bit too fascinated by the whole process. After her tosses (which maybe went about five feet), she spent the rest of the afternoon chasing down other people's mullets. However, instead of gently carrying them back to the starting line (home plate?), like the other children did, she chose instead to practice her tossing skills on the way back. With each toss, her fish would get guttier and nastier, until she finally got back to the starting line and handed the fish to the next contestant.

Not surprisingly, it seemed as though the fish weren't lasting quite as long as they were at last year's event. Hmmm... wonder why?

Every time I tell people that we went to the Mullet Toss, they always pepper us with questions. The first question they ask is always did we do it ourselves.

The answer, once again, is no. No amount of coercion could get Cory to do it this year, and I didn't want to come home smelling like dead fish like I did last year.

But there are plenty of other questions. Some involve throwing style, some involve animal abuse (the fish are dead and frozen before the tossing, in case you're curious), and some folks just want to know if a lot of people with mullets attend the mullet toss (the answer is of course, yes. Florida has a pretty high redneck quotient, especially after the snowbirds leave town).

But most people just want to know what it's like. And here, I can help. I shot a little 20 second video with my camera this year. This guy had some of the longest tosses I've seen (about 100 feet), so grab some popcorn and enjoy:

My Baby Sister

Most of you probably know I'm an only child... so the only "siblings" I've ever had have been the four-legged kind. Actually, I've also had feathered and finned siblings, too.

Today, my "little sister," Keiko, died. She was a beautiful all-white Akita, and the sweetest dog I've ever met. I'm too bummed to write more right now, but I'll post some pictures instead....

Chirp!

A couple of months ago, as I was leaving for work in the morning, I saw a small flock of Monk Parakeets in our front yard. The bright green birds caught my eye, and I tried to snap a couple of pictures, but they were fairly skittish and flew away when I approached.

I'd heard that the Cape had a flock of wild Parakeets (they're not native to the US, but there are several flocks in various parts Florida), but I'd never seen them. There supposedly was a nest somewhere by the Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach, which isn't far from our house.

We spotted them a few more times near our condo-- usually on the power lines, but never saw more than two of them at a time.

Today, after Cory and I went to the Farmer's Market, we stopped by the beach on our way back, and could hear the Monk Parakeets squaking from about 100 feet away. This time, I got a decent picture:

Cute, huh? They've built nests in about a half-dozen trees around the beach... and while they're not nearly as social, they're much less annoying than the stupid gulls that keep trying to steal your lunch at the beach.

Florida Flavor

My parents are both birdwatchers. And they've tried to get me into it. Sure, there's a certain charm to ornithology. But my personal hobby is people-watching. And it's quite a hobby in itself.
Large-bellied drunken hippie-freak. Check this one off in my field guide!
For example, check out this gem we stumbled across today at the Blues Traveler concert. Even better, he stood still long enough for us to get some pictures without startling him. Happy Valentine's Day to us!

Honestly, the photo doesn't even do him justice. He was much more impressive in person.

O, Tannenbaum

You might think that lighting a palm tree would be easy. After all, you don't need to contend with stiff, cold fingers, freezing rain, or leaning on an icy ladder.

You do, however, have to dodge the spikes. See, before a leaf on a palm frond becomes a leaf, it's a razor-sharp spike... much sharper and pointier than any pine needle. And they hurt like a bitch when they stab you.

Was it worth it? I don't know. The tree looks cute, sure. And it's nice to finally decorate for the holidays for the first time since we moved to Florida. But we finished with the tree an hour ago and my hand is still sore from getting stabbed repeatedly by an angry tree.

Speaking of Christmas, our little Zoe is now an internet celebrity. Sure, she's made plenty of appearances on our blogs. And she's had her own MySpace page for nearly three years now. But now, she's visible to all of Southwest Florida on the "Fox-4 Rising" website. When your daddy is the web coordinator at a TV station, he can make things like this happen.

By the way, the little Santa hat is photoshopped in. She'd never be patient enough to let us put a real hat on her!

A Very Skinny Christmas...

A confession-- We have a Charlie Brown-ish Christmas tree. I bought it for $30 at Target six years ago. It's about 6 1/2 feet tall, and maybe three feet across. But when you've lived in apartments most of your life, and have WAY too much stuff already crammed into it, an anorexic tree is the way to go.

The other nice thing: You don't need to buy many ornaments when your tree has an eating disorder. I bought a few packs of ornaments when we got the tree and re-painted a little tin tree-topper.

This year, I bought some fake poinsettia flowers, some little gold pears, a couple packs of gold jingle bells, and some weird gold foliage. voila! The tree is done.

It's pretty pathetic compared to some of the trees we had at the Festival of Trees. On the other hand, I wasn't working with a $500 minimum budget like those tree designers were!

We also bought some lights to put on our palm tree outside. Depending on how that turns out, I may post some pictures of that, too. Stay tuned.

Take a deep breath

Sigh.

The last few weeks have been insanely busy. Between preparing for the Festival of Trees, trying to find a dress and shoes to wear to our Gala (Failed miserably with the shoes. I have a blister on the top of one of my toes. How does that even happen?), catching up on a week's worth of work, attempting to figure out what kind of insane accounting system our folks used at checkout, and delivering expensive, fully-decorated trees, I'm pooped.

And guess what? Christmas is in less than two weeks and I have to start wrapping presents.

Fortunately, I always have a helper when it comes to wrapping:

Seriously. Could she be any cuter?

I've finished most of my shopping for my parents. I've barely started shopping for Cory.

I keep trying to fall back onto the fact that I paid for half of the suit that he bought to wear to our Gala... But I still have to get him something, and I'm kind of at a loss.

Maybe Zoe can think of something good. She seems to be more ready for Christmas than I am.

For the Dogs

One of the weird things about living in Florida is that the Farmer's market runs from October until May. So, while yesterday was the last Farmer's market of the year in my hometown, it was also the first one of the season here.

My plan was to get there around 9:00 in the morning while there was some good stuff still there. But for some reason, I actually managed to sleep in (which I usually can't do on the weekends). I didn't get there until well after 11:00 and was a little bummed. I was hoping to get there before everyone bought all the good veggies.

However, my disappointment quickly turned to excitement, as I realized that the doggie costume contest was about to begin!

Since Cory was off at a work event, it was a little bit sad that I had to experience all the crazy cuteness by myself- so I took pictures to share with him, and now with you. The photos aren't great (I took them with my cell phone), and there were some dogs much cuter than these-- but these were the best photos:

The little guy on the left is a fisherman. His little hat had some lures attached to it, and I'm sure he probably had some bait stuffed in his little vest somewhere.

The tiny little dog on the right was a dinosaur. He was there with two other little guys dressed as cops, with uniforms that said "Dog Park Security."

These were some of yesterday's winners-- the Princess and the Pirate were hilarious-- I particularly loved the blonde wig on the princess. It stayed on the entire morning, which makes me wonder how they attached it to her.

The little weiner-dog on the right was wearing a little varsity jacket. He was there with two other dachshunds, who were dressed as cheerleaders. They won "best group costume."

And speaking of dachshunds, you can't have a doggie costume contest without a weinermobile, right? He won an award, too.

Another winner for group costume-- Tinkerbell and Captain Hook. Ol' Hook was a little camera-shy, but Tinkerbell spent the entire morning posing for the cameras. These were by far the tiniest dogs there.

The largest dog there, no contest, was this big fuzzy Great Pyreneese. Maybe not the fanciest costume, but definitely the most creative. I don't think I'd want to bite into an Oreo with that much fur, though!

Keeping it Brief...

Okay... so we're all breathing a sigh of relief about Ike. At least here, we are. In Cuba, they're probably crapping their pants. And Haiti? I work with a couple of Haitians who rarely hear from their family in the first place-- and with the constant flow of hurricanes barraging that country, they haven't heard a thing in ages.

So, two things-- if you're as obsessed with weather watching as I am (well, really just "hurricane watching), check this site out:
www.stormpulse.com
The graphics are awesome. My dad sent me the link after I made last week's post, and I'm totally hooked.

Second, if you haven't seen this website yet, this is really cool:
photosynth.net
You need to download the software (which apparently eats up your graphics system) to actually use photosynth-- and I don't need it that much-- but just watch the demo on the homepage for a few minutes. So very cool.

Wordless Wednesday

I bet you thought I forgot again!

Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, Florida

To be honest, since becoming unemployed, I've found it hard to keep track of the days. Wednesdays used to be the start of my work-week... my "Monday." Now, all of the days just kind of run together.

By the way, this is another "recycled" picture. I just haven't seen anything very picture-worthy the last few weeks.

As always, you can visit more Wordless Wednesday participants here.

Larger Than Life

I can't believe I've resisted posting this photo for so long.

As you may already know, the University of Kansas is playing in the Orange Bowl tonight. The University of Kansas also has a very large coach, Mark Mangino. Larger than life, some might say. I know the Orange Bowl mascot probably thinks so.

Thanks to deadspin.com for posting this delicious photo. It makes me giggle like a schoolgirl every time I see it. You know you're a fattie when you're actually larger than a mascot.

My mother has, on occasion, referred to me as a "chubby chaser," because the men I've dated have typically fallen into the "teddy bear" category. The way I see it, I'm a big girl. 5'9" on a short day. I need to date big guys. Just not Mangino-size.

Ok, really quickly, I need to tell my favorite Mark Mangino story.

My friend Molly went to Kansas. And every year, she makes it back for at least one football game. In fact, right now, she's at the Orange Bowl, freezing her ass off. So, last year, Molly and some of her old college friends go to the homecoming game. And they're joking around about how fat their coach is. One of their friends, who doesn't follow football, asks who they're talking about. Molly points down at the field and says, "That's him. Between the 40 yard line and the 42 yard line."

And her friend squeals, "Oh my God, our coach is two yards wide!"

Just at that moment, Mangino turns to the side. And Molly's friend squeals, "He's two yards the other way, too!"

That's a true story.

Here's another: One time, Mark Mangino was driving through Kansas City on a recruiting trip. He traveled down I-435, got off at the wrong exit, and got lost. After driving around for close to an hour, he finally stopped at a gas station to ask for directions.

"Hey," Mangino queries, "How do I get back to 435?"

The gas station attendant replies, "You might try eating a salad."

Ok, so that one probably isn't a true story. But it's damn funny.

Wordless Wednesday

Take a look at my first foray into stupid sock creature-making. He isn't nearly as cool as any of John Murphy's originals, but he has a certain je ne sais quoi-- I'm just not sure what it is.

He doesn't have a name yet. Much like I struggled making him (I think it's a him, though s/he doesn't have any discernible secondary sexual characteristics), I'm also struggling at the art of naming him. If you have any suggestions, let me know before I send him out into the cruel world.

I'm giving him to Marisa, who gave me the Stupid Sock Creatures Kit for my birthday. So she's the one to blame when you have nightmares about brown and blue striped, orange-eyed, big-lipped monsters.

So, for the second straight week, my "Wordless" Wednesday entry has actually been pretty wordy. Oh well. For more Wordless Wednesday, check out today's other W.W. participants!

Just Glad it's Over

Wow. That birthday was rough.

You always hear about "getting laid off around the holidays," and how horrible it is. And yeah, it's pretty low. But at least starting the New Year while you're unemployed makes it easy to pick your top New Year's Resolution.

I can now say from experience that losing your job around your birthday is much, much worse.

It's pretty rough to start a new year of your life with a giant reminder that you're a loser. I half-expected to see a big "REJECT" stamp across my forehead when I woke up this morning.

There were many, many other factors-- ones I really don't have the energy to think about again-- which led to a pretty ugly birthday. And poor Cory had to deal with an hour-long crying jag at the end of the day.

But let's focus on the good stuff-- Presents. I got some nice ones from Cory and from my parents. And check out these beautiful roses from my mom!

I'd have put a picture of my cake in there, too... but it's already half-eaten. And if my mood doesn't get much better, I may eat the rest of it in one sitting.

Anyway, it's my "un-birthday" now (Thank God)!

Happy un-birthday to me!

Happy Birthday To Me!

That's me, 36 years ago to the day. I think we've probably found the root of my fascination with Chocolate. And pukey green. And saddle shoes.

Cute kid, huh? Those were good times-- back before I knew any better. Maybe I should start wearing my hair in pigtails again.

Any guesses as to what's on the TV behind me?

Wordless Wednesday

Forget your holiday poinsettia, your amaryllis, or your Christmas cactus. This is what was blooming in our yard on Christmas day.

The Festivus Bougainvillea is in Bloom.

I'd write more... but I wouldn't want to be late for work on my last day. They might fire me.

Happy Humpday!

To most people, "humpday" is Wednesday-- the day that signifies you're "over the hump" as far as the work-week goes.

The other day, I was talking with my dad, and he called the winter solstice "humpday." It makes sense... you're halfway through the dreary part of the year, and every day from now until late June, we'll get a little more sunlight every day. The solstice arrived nearly 24 hours ago-- meaning the sun will be a little higher in the sky tomorrow... and the next day... and the next... until pretty soon, it's summer again.

Anyway, all of this is just a lead-up to Saturday's NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day, a cool composite photo from the 2005 winter solstice. And if you have a little time, go back and check out some of the NASA APODs from earlier this year. There's some pretty awesome stuff.

(A Wordy) Wordless Wednesday

Ok... so my original plan for Wordless Wednesday was to post a series of pictures from the Florida Everblades' annual "Teddy Bear Toss." I had my digital camera at the game and took a ton of pictures as thousands of stuffed animals rained onto the ice after the Blades' first goal on Saturday night.

However, the pictures are still in my camera, and I lack the motivation to transfer, crop, resize and upload them.

Then, I thought, I can just post the pictures of our bougainvillea that's blooming right now. But I took the photos with Cory's camera, and we seem to have lost the USB cable that connects his camera to the computer. Strike two, I guess.

So, instead, you get another "used" picture that's been living on my computer for years. I promise I'll post those other photos soon-- after all, it's not like I'll have much to do with my days once I'm unemployed!

Wordless Wednesday

This is one of the pictures from our Honeymoon in April. As you all probably know, Cory proposed to me in New Orleans, and were absolutely brokenhearted when Hurricane Katrina hit the Crescent City. The spot where we took this picture is just about 50 yards away from the spot where Cory proposed to me.
