An Athlete in His Prime...

We see it all the time-- an athlete in his (or her) prime suffers an injury so debilitating that he (or she) can't play any more. Think Bo Jackson. Or Jiri Fischer.

Now, devastating news from the world of competitive eating: Kobayashi has an arthtic jaw. On his blog, he calls it a "Fatal Wound."

For those of you who haven't yet seen the wonder of a small japanese man eating 50+ hot dogs in a matter of twelve minutes, it's pretty damned impressive. And a little disgusting. Ok, make that a lot disgusting. And "The Tsunami" Kobayashi has done it six straight years at Coney Island.
Looks like this may be the year for Joey "Jaws" Chestnut. By the way, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is broadcast live every year on ESPN. You can catch it while you're eating your own hot dogs at noon.

Inkslinger

Our friend Jason (aka "Pickle") has had me thinking about getting another tattoo. In the time that we've known him, he's gotten three or four... and while I'm pretty cool for having a tattoo when most of my friends were still in elementary school... I've been pondering getting another for a long time.

My problem is this: I don't know what I want. The dragonfly was an easy call-- though in the 12 years since I've gotten inked, dragonflies have become a little cliche. At least I was the first, right.

I make you this promise now-- If I do get another tattoo-- I won't get one like this. Or this, or even this... no matter how tempting it might be.

In Case You Missed It II: Electric Boogaloo

Our next installment in "In Case You Missed It" is a video that made the rounds at our office a month or two ago. We weren't the only ones-- apparently on the Spike TV "Guys Choice Awards," this clip won the "Most Viral Video" award.

FYI- Other award categories included "Biggest Ass-Kicker" (Gerard Butler, who apparently is a movie star I've never heard of), "Ballsiest Band" (Disturbed, I assume because they continue to put out albums despite the fact that they kinda suck), and Funniest M.F. (Will Ferrell... who's a pretty funny dude).

But I digress. According to its homepage, this video clip has been viewed over 35 million times. But in case you missed it, here's

In Case You Missed It (Part One)

As we all know, I spend a lot of time at a computer. And while much of that time is spent working, I also have a bit of down-time at work-- either waiting for the equipment I need, waiting for a newscast to start, waiting for a game to end, waiting for video highlights to come to the station.

As a result, I do quite a bit of web-surfing.

Most of the fun/cute/interesting things I find on the internet are fun/cute/interesting things that other people had found days, or weeks, or even months before I stumbled across them-- so I always think I'm the last to know about them. And often, I am the last to know.

But other times, I'll mention my recent web discovery to a co-worker or to Cory, and they won't know what on earth I'm talking about.

So, in case you missed them, over the next several posts, I plan to show you some of the fun things I've found on the web. You've probably seen many of them already, but just in case, consider me your gateway to pop culture.

Today's "In Case You Missed It:"

Lolcats

I stumbled across this internet phenomenon sometime around the wedding-- I don't remember exactly when. Essentially, a lolcat is a cat graphic that's designed to make you L.O.L. (Laugh out Loud). It combines a cute and/or funny picture of a cat with a caption or thought-baloon. And because cats are apparently poor spellers (or because computer keyboards aren't built for kitty paws), the captions are annoyingly misspelled-- using some weird computer-geek pidgin English baby-talk.

Our little Zoe is happy to provide an example.

Sometimes, lolcats are very cute.
Like this one. Awwww....
And this one.

Sometimes the pictures themselves are kind of funny.
Like this one.
Or this one.

Sometimes, they're just downright weird.
Really.

Oh, and a lolcat doesn't necessarily have to be a cat. There are also lolbunnies, lolhamsters, and even lolruses (though I think that picture might actually be of a lolseal).

For a more complete analysis of lolcats, read this article. Or don't. Whatever.

Awwwwwwww.....

Baby Cheetahs. The first picture is cute. And then they get progressively cuter after that.

Canadian Invasion

During tonight's broadcast of game four of the Stanley Cup finals, something unprecedented will happen.

Don Cherry will make his first appearance on a national broadcast in the United States. He'll be appearing during the second intermission report, undoubtedly causing a PR nightmare for NBC sometime around 10pm eastern time. Or at least, we can only hope he'll be as loudmouthed and controversial as he is on the CBC.

I've been looking forward to this since I found out a week ago. To be honest, I'm not sure our nation is ready for him. Sure, the guy's a total blowhard. He's opinionated and closed-minded. And his fashion sense is what some would call questionable.

But how can you not love a guy who supports health insurance for pets? And you thought Canada was just on the cutting edge of human healthcare? Au Contraire!
