Thursday Thirteen

Once upon a time... the Sportslady participated in something called the "Friday Five." But the website went defunct, and Fridays are a pretty busy day for me, so I dropped it.

This week: My first foray into the "Thursday Thirteen." Knowing me, this won't last long, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Thirteen things I have been for Halloween:

1. A Leopard. Or maybe it was a cheetah. I was only about six, so it's hard to say. The costume was adorable, though.
2. A gypsy.
3. A fairy.
I wore my white ballet outfit and my mom made me some sweet wings and some kind of a halo/hair wreath thing.
4. A conehead. I said a lot of stuff like, "Mips! Mips!" and "We come from France.... Yes... France." I was only in fourth grade, so nobody but the bus driver got it.
5. Some sort of a punk David Bowie type thing.
6. A rockette. My dad had a sweet tuxedo jacket with tails. The rest was pretty easy.
7. A witch. The first costume I sewed myself. I made of a green lacy dress to go with a black wig... But everyone thought I was supposed to be Cher. That would come in handy later.

8. Little Red Riding hood. It was pretty cute, actually. The next year, I altered it so my friend Casey could wear it.
9. University of Michigan cheerleader.
10. Barbie,
complete with hot pink pumps and disproportionately large breasts. I went to a fraternity party and one of the guys asked me if I was a dude. Very depressing.
11. A Pirate. Because of the fact that I rarely throw things away, I had a sweet puffy shirt and thigh-high boots. It also explains the hot-pink pumps from the year before.
12. Another Witch. This time, I looked a little more Goth... and I added a pointy hat to the outfit.
13. Cher. For real, this time. And I won $100. Not too shabby.

Last night, I was a pirate again. No prize money this year, though. I'll try to post a picture in the next day or so.

How Cool is this?

So, you don't want to carve a pumpkin. They're messy. They turn to mush. Nobody trusts you with a knife.

Never fear, you can carve a virtual pumpkin online.

Here's the one I made.

Now, go make your own, and be sure to show it off to all of us by putting the link to your virtual jack-o-lantern in the comments!

Survey Time!!!

Here's your question.... what should I dress up as for Halloween?

Remember, last year, I won a costume/karaoke contest for $100 bucks... so I not only need costume suggestions, but I also need a corresponding song suggestion (i.e. dress like a geisha, sing "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors).

Fire away...

Cher-tacular

Well, it's been a week since Halloween, and I still haven't shared the saga of Halloween night with you. As I mentioned, I was going to dress as Cher... in part because I already had the black wig.

Ok, there was another reason for a costume change between Saturday and Tuesday. See, I had a bad experience on Saturday night in my Barbie doll costume. We went to the local newsie hangout, an Italian restaurant/karaoke bar, where they were having a karaoke/costume contest (the grand prize was $400, which made getting on stage somewhat enticing). Not only did I completely humiliate myself on the karaoke stage by attempting to sing that god-awful "I'm a Barbie Girl" song, I also nearly got in a fist-fight with some skank as the bar was closing. It's a long story, which I won't get into. Suffice to say, though, that if I was going back to that bar in costume, I wasn't planning to make myself recognizible in any way.

This picture, by the way, were taken late at night, after much of my makeup had worn off. I looked much more Cher-riffic earlier in the evening.

So, when Cory got out of work, we headed over to a friend's house for a brief Halloween soiree. We didn't get there until about 11pm, so we only stayed for about an hour before the party started to break up. From there, we went back to the bar where I'd humiliated myself just a few nights earlier.

Of course, I sang a Cher song, "If I Could Turn Back Time." The grand prize was $100, which wasn't quite as enticing... but I told Cory that if he entered the contest, I would humiliate myself again.

This time, I actually knew the song (ok... I kind of knew the song... and I managed to fake my way through the rest of it). And I kind of sound like Cher when I sing, thanks in part to a long-running joke between myself and my late friend Mike. And I had a large cheering section of tipsy co-workers to support me. And it didn't hurt that the people sitting closest to the stage were hammered, and they thought I was the funniest thing they'd ever seen in their lives.

The result? A nice check for $100.00 was in my hot little hands at the end of the night! Not too shabby, right? I should note that Cory won a $25 gift certificate for his 4th place finish.

I think maybe I should dress like Cher every Halloween.

Stroke of genius

Yesterday at work, Randy and I were pondering how to dress for a co-worker's Halloween "Spooktacular." I'd already dusted off the Barbie costume last weekend for an ill-fated costume contest, and I just can't bring myself to strap on the fake boobies and the long blond wig twice in one year.

I also have a long black wig, part of a witch costume I wore a couple years back. So, we were sitting there, and a light bulb appeared above my head!

Cher!

Several years ago (back when I was in college), I dressed as a witch, and everyone asked me if I was supposed to be Cher. This time, I'm actually trying to look like her. Today, I went to the store, bought some cheap jewelry, dark makeup, and fishnet stockings. I have a pair of bleached and shredded jeans in the wash right now, and a black macrame top stashed away in a closet (I bought it two years ago for $4.00 at a discount store, using the rationale of "I'll probably never wear this, but it's only four bucks," and I never even took the tag off of it). If I end up looking good... or just funny... I'll post pictures sometime soon.

I'm pretty disappointed that I didn't think of dressing as Cher earlier, since the aforementioned costume contest was at a karaoke bar. I guess there's always next year for that.
